When Is the Best Time to Book My Senior Photo Session?

As an experienced senior photographer in the DFW Metroplex, I will say the short and sweet answer is NOW! However, there is not one correct answer to when you should book your senior photo session – there are several variables to take into consideration. Fortunately for us Texans, senior photos can almost be taken year round, but don’t delay booking them so you can ensure the date you want that fits your schedule best. Keep reading for three variables to consider when it’s time to book your very own senior session.

Availability

To ensure you find a time that works for you, start by looking at your availability. You never realize just how little time you have until you try and work a photoshoot into a busy senior year. Before you know it, it’s a month before you graduate, and you still need senior pictures. Yikes!

For example, many extra circular activities such as band and football take place in the fall, leaving very little time for a senior photo session. If you are more involved in sports such as softball and tennis, spring is a difficult season to plan around. The main goal is to not be stressed before or on the day of your senior session – it will show in your photos. On the day of your shoot, you want to be relaxed and enjoy every second.

Style

You most likely already have some idea of the types of photos you want to take to commemorate your senior year. Outfits play an integral role in the overall style of your shoot. If you want to wear a beautiful, long-sleeved gown for your senior session, shooting in the middle of a Texas summer isn’t going to comfortable. Likewise, if you know you want to wear a sundress with spaghetti straps, then waiting until December or January may prove challenging, especially if you’re a warm-weather fan! Have a clear idea of the outfits and look you want to capture before you choose a date for your photo session.

Location

Your location will also fit in with the theme of your shoot. However, not all locations and settings look their best at certain times of the year. Want an urban shoot? Fortunately, this works at almost any time of the year. Two of the most popular locations for a year-round appeal are The Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth and the Westlake Entrada complex in Westlake. Prefer to take photos at a local park? Spring and fall create the best backdrops. For these preferred settings, I always enjoy sessions at Air Field Falls and the Grapevine Botanical Gardens.
